In this story, Emily becomes friends with Kookabuk. Initially, Emily sees Kookabuk at the park and notices that he is playing by himself. Throughout the story Emily continues to see Kookabuk playing alone; she remains interested in him even though he repeatedly ignores her attempts at social contact. She exhibits great perseverance and patience in her efforts to interact with him. Kookabuk’s mom is there to help her son, and to act as an effective guide for Emily. She shows Emily how to engage Kookabuk successfully, and Emily is eager to learn. With Kookabuk’s mom acting as a facilitator, Emily and Kookabuk end the story playing together. A budding friendship begins…..
