Welcome to The Kooky Adventures of My Friend Kookabuk, a wonderful collection of social stories created as a guide to help you and your special child approach new experiences and challenges in a positive and enriching way. (read more)

Successfully navigating through a world filled with uncertainties is difficult for all children. The struggle is often magnified for children who have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).  A social story is a fun and powerful tool in helping to address specific challenges that your child may encounter. Our social stories are thoughtfully designed to encourage the participation of all those who love and support your child.

Our books introduce you to Emily, a neurotypical child (child without a developmental disability).  She becomes Kookabuk’s first friend and narrates all of Kookabuk’s “kooky” adventures.  She reflects upon Kookabuk’s unique way of interacting with the world. Throughout the series, Emily develops an incredible friendship with Kookabuk.  Acting upon the simple virtues of kindness, patience, and acceptance, she proves that in spite of his differences, a deeply rewarding relationship can be achieved.

You and your child will enjoy reading each of Kookabuk’s adventures over and over again. In addition, each story will include “Best of Help Tips”. Look throughout the story for Trevor Bird, a talking macaw.   Trevor’s appearance on any page indicates that a “Best of Help Tip” is being applied.  Trevor will tell you more about the strategies being used at the end of each adventure.  We encourage you to adapt these methods to guide you and your child through various challenges.

Young children learn new skills in small steps. Let’s celebrate each tiny step as we make giant ones together. The creators of The Kooky Adventures of My Friend Kookabuk wish you the “best of help” and remind you to: always see the child first!  (back to top)
